>> Commercialisation Avenues
Mining is a global industry dominated by a relatively small number of multi-national companies. Research-industry collaboration involves visits by industry experts to research facilities and time spent by researchers at mine sites. This practice is dictated by the remote location of the majority of mining operations and by the large centralised company research laboratories, which make full time re-deployment of the scarce resource of skilled industry workers impractical. The industry is expert at long-distance collaboration, with many companies running information and education sessions over the internet.
Within this commercial environment, JKMRC has successfully developed three main avenues for commercialising the results of research:
| 1 |
Mining companies have a wide range of skills and expertise in-house. The first route to commercialisation of minerals industry research is frequently direct adoption of processes and philosophies by the companies. |
| 2 |
Common industry practice is to use consulting companies to undertake specialised process improvement studies. The second route for benefits to flow from minerals research to industry is to transfer the knowledge and tools developed in research projects to JKTech, a consulting organisation with international reach. |
| 3 |
The mining industry has a relatively small number of suppliers of equipment and consumables. The third route to successful utilisation of research is professional product development, marketing, sales and support by suppliers who have a collaborative research alliance with a research provider. |
