An essential element of Diamond Value Management is the maximisation of diamond liberation from kimberlitic ores, at minimum value loss through diamond damage.
Many aspects of the overall problem of measuring and optimising diamond liberation and damage have received attention in various forms over many years.
The winning of diamonds requires liberation of the diamond through fragmentation of the host rock and the concentration and recovery of the liberated diamond. Diamond concentration and recovery is a relatively mature, well understood and efficient process. Much less is known about the processes of liberation and consequent damage.
The Diamond Value Management Project applies powerful scientific, engineering and mathematical tools to the development of a methodology to permit operation much closer to the liberation/damage optimum.
The outcome is expected to be a computer-based planning tool for use in optimally designing and managing blasting practice and comminution circuits. Ideas for novel extraction and comminution processes may also be generated.
