arrowAMIRA - ARC Linkage

The Australian Mineral Science Research Institute comprises four existing world-class mineral research centres together with a global network of associates and collaborators. The alliance is an initiative of the global mineral industry through its research broker AMIRA International in joint venture with the Australian Research Council, the Universities of Queensland, South Australia, Melbourne and Newcastle, and state governments.sustainability

The proposed research programs will develop the science necessary to underpin the key elements of future sustainability in mineral processing. The AMSRI alliance comprises six main science programs. Three of these address issues identified by the industry as keys to a sustainable future in a number of recent technology reviews. The other three programs provide the science support required in the form of fundamental studies of the physico-chemical characteristics of mineral systems and the development and deployment of appropriate measurement and mathematical techniques.

The six programs are:

istockEnergy Efficient Liberation – radically reduce energy costs and greenhouse footprint by developing novel mineral crushing and grinding technologies.

Frugal Water Use and Efficient Waste Processing – reduce water consumption and environmental impact through an understanding of clay chemistry, advanced flocculation, and benign disposal of high concentration slurries.

Innovative Processing – improve value recovery and resource utilisation using novel technologies such as dry processing and high intensity flotation.

Materials and Interface Science – advance the physico-chemical science of mineral processing systems.

Advanced In- and Ex-Situ Analysis – develop the advanced analytical techniques needed for the solution to the scientific and engineering problems in mineral processing.

Mathematics in Mineral Processing – build a critical mass of mathematical skills and techniques for the solution of complex mineral processing problems.
